the challenge

Location: South Loop condo with a bright light and urban setting

CLIENT: Young professional

WHAT DOESN’T WORK NOW: The bathroom had significant water damage caused by a leaking shower, which required a full overhaul. Beyond resolving the plumbing issues, the space lacked personality and a sense of retreat.

STYLE: Botanical with clean lines

HOW DO YOU WANT TO FEEL: A secluded garden oasis that feels like a true escape from the city

FUNCTIONAL REQUEST: Added storage and materials that are easy to clean and maintain

the design process

  1. Schematic Design

After a persistent leak led to major water damage, this bathroom called for a complete transformation. Our client was not only ready to resolve the issue, but also to reimagine the space as a calming escape from city life. Living in the South Loop, she wanted the bathroom to feel tucked away and transportive, like a private garden retreat within her home. With the extent of the damage, the space was fully gutted, including replacing compromised studs, to create a fresh foundation. During schematic design, we focused on the elements that mattered most to her: thoughtful storage, easy maintenance, and a layout that felt both functional and serene. Some of these elements we incorporated:

Shower Door: A streamlined glass shower door that helps contain water while keeping the space feeling light and clean

Vanity Storage: A highly functional vanity with ample built-in storage to keep daily essentials organized and out of sight

Materials: Durable, easy-to-clean finishes that support everyday use while maintaining the soft, garden-inspired feel

Decorative Lighting: Layered lighting that adds warmth and enhances the tranquil, spa-like atmosphere

2. Design Development

This bathroom balances beauty and practicality to create a space that feels both elevated and effortless. Each material and detail was chosen with intention, layering texture, color, and function to support daily use while enhancing the overall experience. The result is a serene, garden-inspired retreat that feels fresh, warm, and thoughtfully composed.

Washable Wallpaper: The wallpaper brings in a soft, botanical moment while remaining highly practical. Its washable finish makes it ideal for a bathroom, offering durability without sacrificing charm.

Quartz Countertop: A quartz countertop provides a clean, polished look while standing up to everyday wear. Its durability and low maintenance make it a natural fit for a hardworking vanity.

Shower Niche: A built-in niche within the shower keeps essentials neatly tucked away, maintaining a clean and uncluttered look while adding to the overall functionality.

Shower Tile: Two complementary tiles were used in the shower to add depth and dimension, creating subtle visual interest while staying cohesive with the overall palette.

Layered Lighting: A mix of overhead lighting and decorative fixtures creates a warm, inviting glow, allowing the space to feel both functional and atmospheric.

Painted Ceiling: The ceiling was finished in a honey yellow, adding an unexpected wash of warmth that enhances the garden-inspired feel and softly reflects light throughout the room.
